About Fidencio Fifield-Perez

At the age of seven, Fidencio Fifield-Perez was illegally smuggled into the United States from Mexico. Under the Obama era immigration policy, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), he is temporarily relieved from the threat of deportation until new policies are enacted. Referencing traditional Oaxacan craft techniques, the artist works primarily with cut paper from paintings, prints, and maps to form large-scale installations that examine border relations and the stories of individuals living within what he calls a  “brown body, the battleground onto which events, perceptions and laws are formed.” During his residency Fifield-Perez created a site-specific installation in Grace Church about the complexity of immigration in the United States.

Fidencio Fifield-Perez completed his MA in Painting with a minor in Sculpture and an MFA in Painting with a minor in Printmaking from the University of Iowa (2015) and his BFA from the Memphis College of Art (2013).
